Taking an inventory of where you are and where you would like to be is important in business growth. You can use all kinds of different assessments depending on what your needs are: Technology Hardware (aka the must have computers, tablets, smartphones, etc), Mobile Tools, Website, Customer Communications, and what we are discussing today, your Online, Digital, Social Presence.
There are many different social networking platforms out there and it is important to know two things:
- You can not be active and present on all of them. (unless you don’t plan to do any work)
- They aren’t for everyone. Each platform is different and will appeal to different people
Using the Social Presence Assessment Checklist, which you can download here, evaluate what networks you have tried and whether you are currently using them as well as which networks you would like to try.
I recommend you only try one social network at a time and use it for two weeks. I know it is tempting to sign up for all of the social networks you can get to, however, you don’t want to jump on without having an active presence. It is better not to be there at all than to have an abandoned or ghost profile. If you try each network for two weeks, you should know in that time if you would like to focus and build your online presence there.
Have fun out there and don’t forget to network! It will take some time, but if done correctly, it will pay off.
